About the event

The 2022 edition of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific Survey was launched last Tuesday, 12 April 2022, from 14:00 to 15:00 (Bangkok time). Published annually since 1947, the Survey provides analyses to guide policy discussion on the current and emerging socio-economic issues and policy challenges to support sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.

The event was opened to media, policymakers, civil society, academics, researchers, and all other stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region as well as outside of the region.

Survey 2022 presentation

About the report

The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific Survey 2022 discusses at length how the rapid development of Asia-Pacific economies over the past few decades has lifted millions out of poverty but the high economic growth has masked key social issues, particularly inequality, and the global financial crisis and COVID-19 pandemic have forced such issues into the mainstream.

This 75th issue of the Survey released during the auspicious occasion of ESCAP's 75th anniversary, suggests Asia-Pacific economies must prioritise inclusive growth – whereby citizens of all socio-economic groups are able to improve their livelihoods, incomes, health and education levels. An important opportunity to shift the paradigm that was missed in 2009, so it is vital that Asia-Pacific economies make full use of this post-COVID-19 rebuilding process.

Asia-Pacific Stats Café Series: Statistics that Leave No One Behind: Inclusive Data Charter

Submitted by KBOONPRI on Thu, 07/01/2021 - 10:02
Event attendance type
Event Type
Event Background

This Stats Café brought together experts from the Inclusive Data Charter network, including international and regional organizations and national governments, to discuss experiences in producing and using inclusive and disaggregated statistics to progress the Leave No One Behind commitment.

In order to live up to the promise inherent within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to “Leave No One Behind,” we need timely, comprehensive, and disaggregated data to better understand the situation of the poorest and most marginalized. In the Asia-Pacific region, COVID-19 has further heightened the need for accurate data on marginalized communities as the pandemic has exacerbated socio-economic inequities and disrupted data collection efforts.

While there have been some advances in methodologies on data disaggregation since the launch of the SDGs in 2015, critical challenges remain, including the lack of political will and prioritization of inclusive data, limited coordination and cooperation between data producers -especially around the utilization of existing data, and the complexities of collecting data on hard-to-reach populations.

Thirteenth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development

Submitted by KITTIPHO on Tue, 02/04/2024 - 14:41
    Event attendance type
    Event Type
    Event Background

The 13th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development is scheduled to take place under the theme of “Just Energy Transition” on 2-3 December 2024 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. The Forum will be jointly organized by the five United Nations Regional Commissions.

Energy transition, in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is the key transformation needed to achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Energy transition is also the key to achieving the Paris Agreement. Given that the energy sector is responsible for more than two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable energy transition is critical to achieving the Paris Agreement. The progress in achieving SDG 7-responsive energy transition, however, has been far less than what is needed. Concerted efforts are required by all levels of stakeholders to accelerate the energy transition to enable achievement of SDG 7 and NDCs.

The energy transition landscape is in a constant state of evolution. The call made at COP28 to triple the renewable energy generation capacity and double the rate of energy efficiency underscore the significant challenges ahead for governments, businesses, research institutions and civil society organizations. Maximizing the utilization of digital technologies and artificial intelligence to advance energy transition is also imperative. Similarly, mainstreaming gender in energy planning and policy development will be important for its success. There is also a growing momentum towards phasing out coal from power generation, highlighting the importance of a just energy transition to ensure inclusivity and alignment with sustainable development principles.

The 13th Forum in Bangkok will explore pathways to accelerate the energy transition and ensure that the transition is “just”. Experts from the energy sector, representatives from governments, UN entities, international organizations and other stakeholders will discuss major issues and demonstrate actions to just energy transition. There will be a series of roundtables, parallel sessions and side events about energy issues such as access to clean cooking, access to electricity, renewable energy, energy efficiency, digitalization and artificial intelligence, gender mainstreaming, youth in energy and cleaner use of fossil fuels.

Accelerating Corporate Sustainability in Asia Pacific and Empowering SMEs to navigate the evolving ESG landscape

Submitted by KRANGSIM on Mon, 01/04/2024 - 09:15

    Event Background

2024 sees a rise in mandatory ESG reporting regulations and requirements, extending to not just listed companies but also non-listed smaller companies. With SMEs making up 90% of businesses globally, this calls for collective action across the sustainability value chain, from SMEs in supply chains, to corporates, and financial institutions. Join this Roundtable session as esteemed leaders of various backgrounds in the sustainability space in the APAC regions dive into the intersection of green, finance, and technology to drive Corporate Sustainability. The session will showcase the benefits of digital self assessment and reporting frameworks, such as those led by UN Global Compact and its country Networks, and how these have led to improving sustainability performance, especially in SMEs. In addition, as a follow-up on the official launch one year ago, the session will also showcase the actualisation of the ESBN Asia-Pacific Green Deal through the ESGpedia digital platform in bringing about real-world benefits, with real case study examples including Sustainable Financing and greening supply chains across Asia.

Webinar on cross-border e-commerce for SMEs’ export: opportunities, challenges and policy implications

Submitted by NSUTTHIVAN on Wed, 20/03/2024 - 15:45
    Event attendance type
    Event Background

    Introduction

The challenges SMEs face in participating in international trade are well-documented. The OECD (2008) identified 47 key barriers to SMEs' engagement in global markets. While cross-border e-commerce has eased some hurdles by enabling sellers to reach a wide audience online, it hasn't solved all problems. Furthermore, participating in cross-border e-commerce requires competitive products and expertise which can be the new challenges for SMEs.

Addressing these issues, policy support for SMEs' involvement in cross-border e-commerce is essential but policymaking is difficult. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) have joined forces with experts to explore the benefits, challenges, and policy needs of cross-border e-commerce for SMEs. This effort aims to inform policymakers in Asia and the Pacific about how to support SME exports through e-commerce.

This webinar aims to dive into these findings and spark meaningful discussion on the topic. It features a panel of experts from industry, academia, and think tanks, offering a range of perspectives and insights.
