About the event

The 2022 edition of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific Survey was launched last Tuesday, 12 April 2022, from 14:00 to 15:00 (Bangkok time). Published annually since 1947, the Survey provides analyses to guide policy discussion on the current and emerging socio-economic issues and policy challenges to support sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.

The event was opened to media, policymakers, civil society, academics, researchers, and all other stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region as well as outside of the region.

Survey 2022 presentation

About the report

The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific Survey 2022 discusses at length how the rapid development of Asia-Pacific economies over the past few decades has lifted millions out of poverty but the high economic growth has masked key social issues, particularly inequality, and the global financial crisis and COVID-19 pandemic have forced such issues into the mainstream.

This 75th issue of the Survey released during the auspicious occasion of ESCAP's 75th anniversary, suggests Asia-Pacific economies must prioritise inclusive growth – whereby citizens of all socio-economic groups are able to improve their livelihoods, incomes, health and education levels. An important opportunity to shift the paradigm that was missed in 2009, so it is vital that Asia-Pacific economies make full use of this post-COVID-19 rebuilding process.

The sixth session of the Committee on Transport is scheduled to be held from 12 to 13 November 2020.

The secretariat is monitoring the rapidly evolving situation with regard to the COVID-19 outbreak and is putting into place measures to mitigate public health risks associated with mass gatherings. The secretariat continues to receive guidance from the World Health Organization, the authorities of the host country of ESCAP and the United Nations Secretariat.

Decisions on the schedule and modality of the Committee session to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants will be communicated as soon as practicable.

Credentials

Delegations are kindly requested to submit letters of credentials to Mr. Weimin Ren, Director, Transport Division, ESCAP, United Nations Building, Rajadamnern Nok Avenue, Bangkok 10200, Thailand, Fax: (66-2) 288-1067, 288-3050, at their earliest convenience prior to 1 October 2018.. Letters of credential should be addressed to the Executive Secretary of the ESCAP and emailed to [email protected].

Members of delegations are kindly reminded to bring official identification with them, duly signed by the appropriate authorities of their respective Governments/Agencies/Organizations, and provide them to the Secretariat staff at the registration counter located on the ground floor of the UNCC along with a copy of the letter of credentials indicating their appointment to the delegation.

Registration and identification badges

Participants are requested to register and obtain a visitor’s badge with ID picture on the first day of the meeting, i.e. Monday, 19 November 2018 between 08.00 hours and 09.00 hours. This is done at the Registration Counter located on the ground floor of the UNCC. International cooperation to achieve the SDGs during COVID-19 pandemic: current challenges and prospects

Submitted by RRAMAN on Wed, 23/03/2022 - 12:29
Event attendance type
Event Background

One of the dramatic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the worldwide lockdown. Governments have introduced severe restrictions on the movement of people, goods, and vehicles to slow down the rapid spread of the virus among population. In addition to the decline in global trade (in 2020, trade in goods has fallen by 8%, trade in commercial services – by 21%), collapse of some service markets (tourist services decreased by 62.2%) and the disruption of international production chains due to difficulties in logistics; international cooperation in solving global and regional development problems has received a significant blow. The initial focus on solving the problems associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, only by using internal resources eventually did not show its effectiveness, but at the same time made it necessary to take a fresh look at the existing system of international cooperation for sustainable development (SDG 17).

Issues for discussion:

  1. Reasons of suspension of the international cooperation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development implementation.
  2. Principles of international partnership to SDGs promotion in the new economic and social reality.
  3. The platform approach as an effective tool for international cooperation to achieve the SDGs.
  4. The role of international organizations, development institutions and regional integration associations to SDG17 implementation.
  5. The role of entrepreneurship in SDGs promotion and establishing an effective international dialogue

Leveraging Digital Innovation for Promoting Cross-Border Connectivity in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal (BBIN) Subregion

Submitted by RRAMAN on Fri, 05/04/2024 - 17:48
Event attendance type
Event Type
Event Background

The BBIN subregion – constituted by Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal – has considerable trade and industrial potential that is yet to be realized, principally due to lack of efficient and cost-effective connectivity. High trade costs constrain the growth of trade-oriented industries in the region. Better connectivity is necessary to improve efficiency of supply chains and formation of value chains within BBIN. This would in turn help to enhance the competitiveness of the subregion’s manufacturing sectors in the global markets, delivering new opportunities for economic prosperity and sustainable development.

Improving connectivity in the subregion requires trade and transport facilitation reforms oriented on modernizing customs administration, streamlining trade and transport procedures, and upgrading land ports. Digital technologies such as paperless trade systems and electronic cargo tracking systems (ECTS) can help to bring about these reforms and transform the logistics sector for the benefit of traders and investors.

Sevel initiatives to modernize trade procedures and logistics are underway in the BBIN countries. While electronic interfaces and single window systems have been introduced in all four countries their deployment is to be scaled up to cover all ports and transit points. Huge efficiency gains are offered by harmonization of trade and transport operations utilizing advanced cargo information systems, electronic cargo tracking using satellite positioning and communication technologies, application of electronic seals in containers etc.

The objective of the side event is to explore how digitalization can offer better and more efficient tools and solutions for improving connectivity in the BBIN subregion. The discussions will aim to; (1) identify priority areas for utilization of digital technologies to optimize cross-border connectivity, and (2) recommend collaborative actions by BBIN countries for advancing the agenda of digitalization in connectivity.

Advancing Inclusive Businesses in Thailand: Breakfast with Executives

Submitted by DCINAR on Fri, 05/04/2024 - 12:16
Event attendance type
Event Type
Event Background

Background and rationale

In today’s dynamic business environments, inclusive business models are shifting how profitable commercial operations interact with low-income populations. These innovative business models not only deliver indispensable goods, services, and sustainable livelihoods to low-income communities; they are also enabling companies to expand market access, business growth, and brand recognition.

Exemplary inclusive business practices abound across diverse economic sectors in Thailand. Within the agricultural domain, forward-thinking enterprises are empowering smallholder farmers through a combination of innovative solutions and strategic partnerships. These models provide affordable, highquality inputs, and efficient management tools, and, in some cases, offer premium prices for exceptional products. In the tourism sector, businesses embracing inclusivity are experiencing growth by actively engaging and upskilling marginalized groups, providing them with meaningful skill development and decent work opportunities.

Given their critical role in supporting social impact at scale, governments are adopting critical strategies to promote inclusive business. For instance, ASEAN Economic Ministers adopted the ASEAN Inclusive Business Framework in 2017, the Guidelines for Promoting Inclusive Businesses in ASEAN in 2020, and an Action Plan last year.  This Breakfast with Executives is a strategic opportunity to share and explore inclusive business opportunities in Thailand, and to put forward recommendations on how the government could support businesses to develop and scale up these models. Advancing Inclusive Businesses in Thailand: Breakfast with Executives

Submitted by DCINAR on Fri, 05/04/2024 - 11:33

Event Type
Event Background

In today’s dynamic business environments, inclusive business models are shifting the way in which profitable commercial operations interact with low-income populations. These innovative business models not only deliver indispensable goods, services, and sustainable livelihoods to low-income communities; they are also enabling companies to expand market access, business growth and brand recognition.

Exemplary inclusive business practices abound across diverse economic sectors in Thailand. Within the agricultural domain, forward-thinking enterprises are empowering smallholder farmers through a combination of innovative solutions and strategic partnerships. These models are providing affordable, high-quality inputs, efficient management tools, and, in some cases, offering premium prices for exceptional products.

Your insights and contributions will help shape the promotion of inclusive business models in Thailand.

Accelerating Corporate Sustainability in Asia Pacific and Empowering SMEs to navigate the evolving ESG landscape

Submitted by KRANGSIM on Mon, 01/04/2024 - 09:15
    Event attendance type
    Event Background

2024 sees a rise in mandatory ESG reporting regulations and requirements, extending to not just listed companies but also non-listed smaller companies. With SMEs making up 90% of businesses globally, this calls for collective action across the sustainability value chain, from SMEs in supply chains, to corporates, and financial institutions. Join this Roundtable session as esteemed leaders of various backgrounds in the sustainability space in the APAC regions dive into the intersection of green, finance, and technology to drive Corporate Sustainability. The session will showcase the benefits of digital self assessment and reporting frameworks, such as those led by UN Global Compact and its country Networks, and how these have led to improving sustainability performance, especially in SMEs. In addition, as a follow-up on the official launch one year ago, the session will also showcase the actualisation of the ESBN Asia-Pacific Green Deal through the ESGpedia digital platform in bringing about real-world benefits, with real case study examples including Sustainable Financing and greening supply chains across Asia.
