Executive Secretary with President Joko Widodo

Indonesia’s national ownership of the SDGs has resulted in notable progress. During a mission to the island nation on 27 and 28 February, ESCAP Executive Secretary Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana highlighted Indonesia's achievements and ongoing commitments to sustainability.

During her visit, the Executive Secretary held a special dialogue with President of Indonesia HE Joko Widodo. Together, they spoke extensively about climate action, sustainable oceans and initiatives for low carbon economies.

The President shared that Indonesia’s new capital will be built on the sustainable cities concept critical to manage urban growth and development. They also discussed the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, particularly working together with Pacific countries on climate action, as well as accelerating regional action on the SDGs.

Ms. Alsijahabana held further bilateral meetings with government representatives. She underscored the importance of Indonesia’s active participation in the upcoming 76th Commission Session of ESCAP with Foreign Minister H.E. Ms. Retno Marsudi. The Executive Secretary also spoke with Vice President of Indonesia H.E. Mr. Ma’ruf Amin, Minister of National Development Planning H.E. Mr. Suharso Monoarfa, Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education H.E. Mr. Bambang Brodjonegoro and Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments H.E. Mr. Luhut Binsar Panjaitan to discuss how Indonesia can contribute to the SDG Decade of Action.

While in Jakarta, the Executive Secretary and ASEAN Secretary-General H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi also met to discuss scaling up collaboration and the new ASEAN-UN Plan of Action 2021-2025.
