ESCAP and the United Nations Regional Network on Migration for Asia and the Pacific were organizing an expert group meeting on the Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2024. The report was drafted by ESCAP in partnership with the Regional United Nations Network in preparation for the intergovernmental Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Migration, scheduled for the first half of 2025.

International migration is an important multidimensional reality of major relevance for sustainable development in the region. As of 2020, there were about 67 million immigrants in the region, 71 per cent of whom were from other countries within the region, and over 109 million emigrants had left Asia and the Pacific*.

The Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2024 used the most recent evidence and analysis to provide an overview of the levels and trends in international migration in the Asia-Pacific region. It highlights progress, emerging issues, promising practices and challenges related to the implementation of the 23 objectives of the Global Compact and their links to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The report will be released later this year.

The expert group meeting provided an opportunity for participants, in an expert capacity, to review first drafts of the different chapters and support the main authors in finalizing the report by the end of 2024.
