14 to 15 November 2023 | By invitation only

NEARPIC 2023 will be jointly organized by ESCAP, China Electricity Council (CEC), and the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) in Beijing, China. This year’s NEARPIC holds significance in several aspects. Not only has NEARPIC come full circle back to China and is organized in-person for the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19, but also substantively, it marks the milestone of launching the Geen Power Corridor Road Map for Northeast Asia.

In 2019, ESCAP undertook a study report that examined the extensive literature on power interconnections in Northeast Asia and found that there is a shared view on the untapped benefits of power grid connectivity in the region. The ESCAP report developed nine strategies to support concretizing progress of connectivity initiatives in Northeast Asia that would also provide a pathway toward promoting sustainable development and energy transition efforts under the SDGs and Paris Agreement.

The Green Power Corridor Road Map for Northeast Asia had been developed as a follow-up project under Strategy Nine of the above report and aims to build a common vision among Northeast Asian countries by proposing actions and timelines for moving towards interconnected power grids.

In this regard, the launch of Green Power Corridor Road Map at NEARPIC 2023 is an important opportunity for the region to take stock of the discussions so far and discuss the way forward. While progress has been slow due to COVID-19 and other geopolitical issues, considering the commitments of the regional economies to drastically reduce GHG emissions, power interconnections should be prioritized as a practical solution to meet rising energy demands and climate action goals.

The Forum will also discuss progress made and planned activities related to power interconnection in North-East Asia by key stakeholders and development partners, and innovations in the power sector contributing to energy transition in the region and beyond.

The Forum will have a dedicated session following up from the 6th North-East Asia Multistakeholder Forum on Sustainable Development Goals 2022 where the implementation of SDG 7 was discussed to see what are the key gaps in the region and how to achieve SDG 7 and related SDGs in North-East Asia.
